In general it seems as if children are much better than adults at
surviving assaults on the brain.  In his book "The Biological
Foundations of Language", Lenneberg documents cases of hemispherectomies
(removal of a hemisphere of the brain).  For left hemispherectomies,
adults are left with permanent speech impairment.  In children, though,
the speech function is taken over by the right hemisphere.
