Any mail sent explicitly through hao using bang(!) syntax between midnight Thursday, Feb. 11, when an operating system upgrade was performed on this machine, and 2pm Monday, Feb. 15, is likely to have been bounced. This turns out to be due to bugs in the Integrated Solutions 4.0 Rev. D 4.3BSD kernel resolver code. Canonical name queries apparently return the input CNAME rather than the expected A record under some conditions. I also notice this because I cannot do "telnet boulder" any more, I must explicitly do "telnet boulder.colorado.edu", despite the fact that "nslookup boulder" will properly return the Internet address for boulder.colorado.edu. I was able to fix the problem by recompiling the BIND resolver library, linking sendmail with it, and ignoring the multiply-defined routine complaints. I can't wait until we get rid of this piece of junk and bring up the mail system on a real machine (a Sun-4). --Greg
