[net.math.stat] hardcopy graphics devices - advice requested

dma@ucbbach.UUCP (04/09/85)

We are shopping for a hardcopy monochrome graphical output device for
use in our student terminal room. Desiderata are:

    $1000 - $5000 price range
Sturdy & reliable: capable of printing 2000 or so pages per month
(it will be used by many undergraduates)
Automatic paper feed & otherwise capable of "hands off" operation.
Configurable as a lineprinter under 4.2bsd

The last two seem to rule out pen plotters: dot-plot printers or
inexpensive laser printers seem like the best bet. Two devices on which
we might be able to get good prices are the DEC LA100 "Letterprinter"
(it has a dot-plot graphics mode) and the DEC LN03 laser printer, but
we're not sure about their reliability.

We are not too familiar with the market and would appreciate any comments
on these or other devices. Send me e-mail; if there is interest I will
summarize to the net.
