Box 9, Station P > Toronto, Ontario > Canada M5S 2S6 (416) 960-3030 I sent away to AEC for the scoop, so I thought I would share the news. The price is $2100 US funds (a one time charge), with $720 a year for the optional maintenance contract. Manuals are $30 each. It looks like a good package, but not the premier system for the IBM PC. Specs I saw on SAS for the PC looked a lot better, although SAS is pretty expensive, even for an educational licence for up to 10 PC's: SAS Info: M E D I A L I C E N S I N G System Disk Needs Floppies Sent First Year Second Year Base SAS 3.5 Meg 13 $1500 $1200 SAS Stats 2 Meg 9 $1200 $800 Ouch, that's a lot of money. But from what I can tell, SAS is the best PC stat package. :-) In their information mailed to me, AEC claims "No other package is avalable at such a low price! [sic]" UNIX|STAT is not a big stat package, but it does about all the things you would teach to undergraduates in their first two courses, AND IT IS AVAILABLE AT AN UNBELIEVABLY LOW PRICE!!! Cough. Ahem. Sorry, I got carried away. UNIX|STAT is $15 for a copy for the IBM PC or any clone, with unlimited copying allowed, and it is $15 for any user or site. Further, students can take the package and online documentation with them, thus avoiding an age old problem of people reminiscing about that great package they used in school. There is no maintenance contract to automatically send out new releases ;-). Manuals are $10 for the Handbook, and $5 for printed manual entries. For educational uses, this documentation must be supplemented by presentations by knowledgeable users; there is no student guide. Many places get a couple of Handbooks for reference and introduction, and then depend on the online manuals and online help. One place I know of put UNIX|STAT on over 100 PC's, and for $15, that worked out to $0.15 per copy. UNIX|STAT source is available on mag tape for larger computers with C compilers. The cost? A MERE $20, WORLWIDE! :-) :-) How do I distribute software at such low prices? It's a hobby. Because I posted a description of UNIX|STAT recently, you will have to write me for more information. Of recent note is that I added a multiple key data sorting utility, mainly because the sort utility on MSDOS is pitiful (doesn't even do numerical sorts). -- Gary Perlman Wang Institute Tyngsboro, MA 01879 (617) 649-9731 UUCP: decvax!wanginst!perlman CSNET: perlman@wanginst
