While I was washing my clothes this weekend, I noticed the (U) symbol on my box of laundry detergent. Does this mean that Pathmark detergent is kosher? Harry Bims houti!chips1 houca!chips2

Yes, you will find the (U) on things like laundry detergent. Now I know you aren't likely to want to eat laundry detergent, but it's easy for the manufacturer to get the approval for such a product and it does have some relevance. If the detergent is ever used for washing dishes or pots, it must be Kosher. (I suppose, conceivably, that if kids are going to put parts of their clothing in their mouths, you'd want it to be washed with a kosher detergent, too:-) Other products where you will definitely find the "hechsher" (supervision) include dish detergent, silver polish, tin foil, Ajax and Spic'n'Span cleansers (used on sinks and whatnot), steel wool soap pads.... Kosher applies to more than just food. It is forbidden, for instance to use the same set of dishes, silverware, serving items, etc. with both milk and meat. At a camp I once went to, the milk dishes were one color and the meat dishes were another, as were the parve dishes; the milk and meat silverware had a different color stripe on the bottom or something like that (it was about seven years ago...). Not being fully familiar with all the kosher laws, I don't know how it could apply to laundry detergent, but it would not surprise me to see (U) on some rather unexpected items. -Dave Aronson idis!mi-cec!dja da2p%cmcctd@cmuc
