Ok! How about a survey on sleeping postures? I always sleep lying on my side (turned right) with my right elbow covering my eyes. This invariably makes my head fall out of the pillow. For some reason I cannot sleep lying on my back or lying on my side turned left. What do the experts have to say about sleeping postures and personality? Post your comments to the net please!

There is an interesting paperback book titled "Sleep Positions" which describes some common sleeping postures and discusses the psychological types which use them. The thesis is that sleeping positions tend to meet the psychological, rather than the physical needs of the sleeper. For example, people who usually sleep on their backs (the "royal" position) are a certain type with a high self-esteem. Even if they have a lesion on their back, they will tend to sleep this way rather than change it. The book also discusses people who sleep on their stomachs (they are trying to be in control, "on top of" their situations), spoon-sleepers, people who sleep nose-to-nose (usually happily married), the Dutch-wife pillow sleeper, and others. I'm not an expert, but I have an interesting note to make: I used to be into sleeping on my back (it's very meditative). However, after I stopped meditating, I found that I couldn't go to sleep on my back. I also used to sleep on my stomach, but after I gained (a lot of) weight, I found that that wasn't comfortable either. I tend to sleep on my side a lot now because I am either a) sleeping in my girlfriend's single bed, or b) sleeping on two beanbags (i don't have a bed at home). -- Randwulf (Randy Haskins) genrad!mit-eddie!rh or... rh@mit-ee (via mit-mc)

My sleeping posture tends to be contorted. After all, there's only so much room in a bed for two people and three puppies.
