[net.music] Los Lobos

The Village Voice gave Los Lobos the highest rating in their
review of recent albums. I haven't heard it yet but I think I might
run out this weekend and get it. I'll let you know.

Has anyone heard the recent album by Los Lobos (I think I got
their name right)? Rolling Stone gave it a very good review, citing
a wide variety of musical styles, and a lot of good rock, but I can't
recall what else they had to say, and would appreciate others
opinions.

I heard Los Lobos yesterday for the first time that I can remember. It
was funny, I could have swore my eclectic Buffalo station WBNY was
playing a polka!! Then just as I thought they were going to credit
the Jimmy Sturr orchestra they said Los Lobos... Do they have more
than one album and if so what would be your recommendations netlanders..

I'm familiar with both albums they have out. I think both are
excellent. The first one, entitled just "Los Lobos", is more like an
EP. It has a great version of Ritchie Valens "Lets go, Lets Go".

Both LPs mix traditional norteno "polka" style and more modern {I dare
say "rockabilly"} style. The title cut on the 2nd LP "How will the Wolf
Survive" is the most rock oriented and will probably get the most
airplay. Particularily good are the cuts "Evangeline", "I got Loaded",
and a mandolin instrumental I can't remember the name of.

Some of the cuts are very similar to Zydeco music a la Buckwheat Zydeco
and Clifton Cheinier (sp). Steve Berlin (of The Blasters) plays saxes
on both LPs. He is listed as part of the band (instead of a guest
artist) on the 2nd album. He also produced both LPs. My recommendation
is buy both LPs and support these guys! My understanding is they have
been playing around the Los Angeles area for 10-15 years.

There's a favourable review of Los Lobos' album in the January issue
of Guitar Player. I've only heard one track on Dallas' radio, but
it sounded pretty good.
