As of several months ago when I unsubscribed to net.religion and net.philosophy, the amount of intolerance and ignorance were heavy enough to turn me away. Regardless of the purpose of the two groups, a number of contributors made attack their modus operandi rather than discussion, and they were often not well armed with tolerance and knowledge. I enjoy a good discussion on both religion and philosophy - all viewpoints, but I prefer more light than sparks, realizing that any intense exchange of ideas usually is accompanied by strong feelings. Alan, you have renewed my interest in the two groups - I'll renew my subscription and view some of the back issues. Maybe our next correspondence may be about Kant or....
