Subject: fixing a trashed disk

I had a problem with a destroyed disk too. At 1am one morning I was
playing with MacPaint, and decided to center the simple screen drawing
I had made on the page. I moved it with the show page option. Of course,
the mac then had to create a disk copy so it could page section in and out now.
Well, there wasn't enough room on my paint disk to do that, which it
promptly warned me of with the "Running out of room... OK" box. Sure, I said
ok, then saved. Disk overflowed. No sweat. Start the cycle over again..
"Running out of room...OK" "Yes, save on *another* disk.." (it saved great).
MacPaint then quietly stopped. I wanted to print it, so I checked my file
size. Yep, there was enough room to put the painting back on the macpaint
disk and print it. A few K left over too. I used the finder to copy it.
I then got into Macpaint. First thing it did was tell me the disk was "Running
out of room... OK"... Then promptly destroyed my disk with whatever it did
upon terminating. Got ID 13's when booting, and 2's when reading after booting
of another disk. Luckily after the 4 attempt I remembered Bruce's advice
about using Option-Command. (Course, I didn't remember which keys they were,
just had a hunch from the way the mac philosphy seemed to be going..)
I tried it, and got EVERYTHING back, minus the folders.. No Biggie, folders
are easy to make, especially since the Empty folder was there. I also
lost my Info boxes, which was slightly less nice, but recoverable with a little
searching of files. The only bad point about this (besides the fact it
shouldn't had happened) is that this is NOT DOCUMENTED! If I wasn't
reading this list, I would have basically lost a disk until I could find
a magnet to unformat it. It would have been nice to find this note on the
same sheet as the improved copying information was found! The systems
user friendly.. the documentation isn't..
