The usual selection of such pieces (and I do not necessarily refer to previous articles in this group) would give to a neophyte a very slanted view of what is classical music. After all, what is it? Just one genre (Tchaikowsky, Trumpets, Tympani and Trombones)? And what is `attractive' to a neophyte? I think you have to choose what *you*, as the person who will introduce your friend to this area, like most, find most interesting or challenging, and guide him through the listening. Tell him, show him, why you particularly love this piece. I did it with a friend -- using Bach's Cantata BWV 106 (Actus Tragicus), and it worked above and beyond all expectations. On the other hand, I think that the so-called easy pieces do not have the potential of evoking in a (new or not) listener much interest or curiosity for more. --Michel (cornell!mf, mf@cornell)
