I noticed in Sunday's NYTimes that Herbert Blomstedt has been named to succeed Edo DeWaart as the Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony. Blomstedt's recordings of the Nielsen symphonies are solid and well-crafted, not unlike the recorded performances of the Rachmaninov's symphonies by DeWaart's that I've heard. The key-word seems to be "sane" -- no bizarre phrasing or sonorities, just solid music making. However I can recall that from 1979-1981, DeWaart's live performances with the SFS were less than sterling, with but a few notable exceptions (Rachmaninov's 2nd, Bruckner's 4th). Anyone in the Bay Area care to give some final thoughts on DeWaart's tenure with the SFS?
