Tis true. The Great Twit will be succeeding Andre Previn as the Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony. From what I read in Sunday's paper, there is some sense in Pittsburgh that Previn is boring and the G.T. is exciting. That's an unfortunate criterion -- I've almost always found Previn's performances far more musical than any of the G.T.'s content-free "interpretations." (The G.T.'s recording of the Brahms symphonies with the Cleveland Orchestra is so commercial-sounding that a friend likened them to a Big Mac and fries, to go.) What I don't understand is why the G.T. left the Vienna State Opera. Was he driven out? I remember that he was ruffling some feathers when he started out there. Did he really have that burning a desire to return to his home town of Pittsburgh? Is there any hope that his visa has expired? Perhaps he'll be caught smuggling coke, like Michael Tilson Thomas did some years ago.
