Subject: Strange sleep/relaxation producing sounds

I find the sound of rustling papers (commonly found in an office environment)
to be very relaxing, to the point of occassionally making me drowsy. Another
person I know has considerable trouble staying awake if there is a running
vacuum cleaner within earshot. Anyone out there have their own personal
soporiferous sound? Any comments about this (like "why")? One person's
sound just doesn't do it to other people. I think that it is weird, and
would like to hear other's opinions, either directly or posted.

Most people will be relaxed by non-descript background noise that approaches
white noise. For me, a steady ventilating fan will knock me out in very
short order. Coffee has no effect on this.
Another component involved in this are noises that people associate with
sleep. I used to have a fish aquarium in which the bubbling filter was
always on. Therefore, I always heard this sound as I went to sleep at
night. Today the same sound will make me drowsy.

Things like disk drive blowers and muffin fans tend to put me under.
(How do I ever get anything done?)
Maybe this stems from the time I worked in a shop that had
a 6-bay 11/45 & 2 big disks (a long time ago).
Naturally the row was about 3 feet from the wall.
The machine room was carpeted(!) and the ceiling was low,
so it was dim behind there. We kept a sleeping bag back
there and took turns knocking off.
The carpeting helped deaden the sound and I think
that made it even more relaxing.
