[net.music.classical] Somebody out there can't read

geoff@callan.UUCP (Geoff Kuenning) (06/10/84)

I've just been catching up on this group and was struck by a remarkable fact:
Mr. Fishell never even MENTIONED the Berg Violin Concerto. He did mention
"Wozzeck" in proximity to light bulbs (leading me to believe that Wozzeck
included that effect, a notion Mr. Fishell later disabused for us). Yet
several people on the net came down hard on him for comparing the Violin
Concerto to broken glass. In fact, the Berg VC was mentioned by someone else
who thought to introduce Mr. Fishell to more listenable Berg.

If you can't read well enough to keep track of who said what and where, I'm
curious exactly why you spend time displaying netnews on your screen? Perhaps
you find the patterns pretty?

By the bye, with respect to broken glass in music: some friends of mine who
like modern music (I tend to avoid "ultra-modern" if that's a communicative
term) went to a concert (Philip Glass, perhaps?) in which the percussionist
played a set of glass wind chimes. Seems the guy got a little carried away in
his enjoyment of playing the piece and at the end, where he was supposed to
play them FF, shattered the chimes and shredded the mallet he was using. My
friends loved it. (Me, I stayed home and listened to some nice old-fashioned
Shostakovich).
