[net.music.classical] Digital Moonscapes - Wendy Carlos

piggott@bnl.UUCP (Christopher Piggott) (06/24/84)

A friend of mine, Wendy Carlos, recently gave me a copy of her new album,
named _D_I_G_I_T_A_L_ _M_O_O_N_S_C_A_P_E_S. It is in some way connected to a movie, but
I'm afraid I know little about this.

The album is totally digital, recorded from a musical instrument called
a SYNERGY, made by Digital Keyboards Inc., 105 5th avenue, Garden City
New York. The instrument, quite popular throughout the United States
and rapidly spreading throughout Europs, is a fine example that American
technology is still alive in the states. The instrumentation can only
be diagnosed as Digital by the truly expert ear.

The album should be released shortly. For those who remember, it
is a sort of follow-up from Switched on Bach and Clockwork Orange,
some of Wendy's earlier works which bridged the gap between Digital and
Classical.

It would be helpful to duffers like me if you would explain what
you mean by the term "digital." It seems like you mean "systhesizer."
Maybe you mean "digital synthesizer," but , after reflection I don't
think so. Perhaps you mean "electronic (as opposed to acoustic)
instrument?" Completely confused by this time ....Dick Grantges

By the way, there are two versions of the CLOCKWORK ORANGE movie soundtrack
album. One is the "official" album with the orange logo and stills from the
movie on the cover. The other has a brown cover and says "WALTER CARLOS'
CLOCKWORK ORANGE", and contains music not used in the movie, including the
complete version of Timesteps.

Trivia question: in the still from the official album cover, we see Alex and
two girls in a record store. Behind them is a wall chart listing current "hit"
records. What two names of REAL groups are listed there? (Actually, one
group actually got their name from the Clockwork Orange movie/book scene in
question.) And, of course, what soundtrack album is featured prominently in
that same scene?
