#N:hplabs:7900002:000:279 hplabs!dembry Aug 19 15:49:00 1983 Yet another example of government dictating expensive rules and regulations to harrass business. If employees want showers, let them ask for them. There is absolutely no need for some mentally- incompetent bureaucrat to REQUIRE that business install showers in new facilities.

Assuming that the presence of showers really does work as claimed (something about which I'll maintain a devout neutrality), it most certainly is a government concern, not a business issue. Questions of energy supply are a collective concern, not an individual matter. Almost any individual company's efforts to help reduce the aggregate energy consumption are worthless, and if it costs the company money to do so -- especially relative to their competitors -- they're not likely to pay attention. It is precisely because of questions like this that I don't join in the great chorus of "isn't government evil, stupid, and incompetent." They may be wrong on any given issue, but at least the problem is being addressed in the right forum.

Many of us asked for showers here at AMD. We were turned down: too expensive. Since the cost of gasoline, auto insurance, etc comes out of our pockets, I guess what management meant was showers were too expensive for the company, and the overall tradeoff was irrelevant. AMD has a lot of good points and I don't want to single them out for this, but rather to point out that government intervention is called for in some cases. #R:hplabs:7900002:hp-pcd:6400022:000:469 hp-pcd!john Aug 23 08:27:00 1983 Unfortunately the goverment is so large that whenever they try to solve a particular problem that they always seem to create a new set of related ones. The bathroom is one of the more dangerous rooms in the house. Are we now going to start seeing workmans comp claims for slipping in the shower? What if you get athletes foot at work?. I'm expecting to see a water shortage next summer where they will have to ration and forbid using showers at work. John Eaton
