Subj; Glenn Branca Anybody else out there heard of him? He's a guitarist, who makes his own instruments and writes symphonies for large numbers of guitars. I keep reading about him, but have never heard any of his stuff. Could anyone who has heard him, enlighten us as to what he is up to and whether it is available on recording? Thanks, Karl ...decvax!decwrl!rhea!star!malik

He also played with a band called Theoretical Girls. The B-side of their "U.S. Millie" single was called "You Got Me", a harsh, dissonant, thrashing song (recorded long before there WAS such a thing as "thrashing" as so-called punks now know it), with very intense rhythms and dissonant guitar. The single is probably very hard to find, though Bleecker Bob's in Greenwich Village, NYC might have it. Symphony No. 1 by Glenn Branca should be available through most mail order record establishments that carry 99 Records. [My apologies to those who don't think discussion of such things belongs in net.music.classical. I *told* you there were some artists/musics that just defied rigid pigeonholing.] -- "So, it was all a dream!" --Mr. Pither "No, dear, this is the dream; you're still in the cell." --his mother Rich Rosen pyuxn!rlr

You might also check out his Recording "The Ascension", also on 99, His First or Third Symphony, which is carried by the cassette only label RoiR. Also, Giorno Poetry Systems records also have some of his stuff, usually backed by John Goirno's ranting (half a good record, anyhow). His most recent recording is "Tonal Plexus" (music for the first 128 overtones of the Harmonic series), performed on these crazy hybrid electric guitar/keyboard hybrid things. Not for the faint of heart, though. ________________________________________________________________________________ If you ask me, I may tell you gtaylor@cornell it's been this way for years Gregory Taylor I play my red guitar....
