A small part of the article is a not-too-subtle promotion for the forthcoming film version of Amadeus, directed in Czechoslovakia by Milos Forman. But most of it is a fascinating, if subjective account of Mozart's greatness - as perceived by Shaffer. Incidentally, if you havn't seen the play, you should do so. I saw it in London at the Olivier shortly after it opened, with Paul Schofield as Salieri. It is likely the most powerful and moving drama that Shaffer has written, Equus notwithstanding. If you incline toward music criticism or historical accuracy, you may find fault with the play, but if you like Mozart's music, you will luxuriate in it.
