Did anyone catch the Philadelphia Orchestra broadcast of Verdi's Macbeth on Tuesday, Oct. 2? I tuned in to the middle of the first act and had to leave before the end of the act, so I didn't find out who was singing. I'd be grateful if someone could tell me. From the actual sound of the voice of the Lady Macbeth and what seemed to be a very cautious reading of the letter, I'm guessing that she's not a native Italian. Her voice was not particularly attractive, but had a great deal of thrust and power, as well as a good solid high "C". I'd like to know who she was. From the bit that I did hear, it was marvelous to such sumptuous orchestral playing in music like this, which so rarely gets it. The rhythmic and tonal clarity (I presume it was Muti conducting) made overly familiar oom-pah-pah sections sound fresh, clean and bold. - Greg Paley
