I play classical guitar and have long searched for the "perfect" strings. One nasty feature of guitar strings is that the lower three strings are wound with round wire over nylon rather than with flat wire. This makes ridges which are not so nice to play on and which promote squeaking. I have tried in vain to find someone who manufactures flat wound guitar strings. For years I have been tempted to get gut strings but never lived in a place where they were easily accessible. I had a catalog by a company called THE INTERNATIONAL VIOLIN COMPANY which sold instrument part mail order ( bow hair by the pound, zither strings, etc.) They sold gut strings, but this was several years ago and I have lost their address. I tried to order gut strings from a music store, and they told me that new laws prohibited their import into this country. I really have trouble believing this, other instrumentalists use gut strings. Please mail any vaguely applicable information to me. Thanks.

Why do you want to get gut strings? I don't think that they have any real advantages over the Perlon ones (I'm not a guitar player though, I play 'cello). Do other string players have comments on this? boris g
