I don't know about classical music performances, but when I see people in the audience with their own instruments at traditional folk music performances, I know that afterwards there will be a jam session/party somewhere not too far away which is very likely to be at least as much fun as the concert.

I once heard a cute story on a show called "Israel and the IPO(Israel Philharmonic Orchestra). Isaac Stern was telling a story, on how carefull a performer must be, when playing in Israel. He mentioned that once at a concert in Jerusalem, he played a particular concerto, and after the concert, people came in to congratulate him. One old european man walked in and said "I dont agree with the way you played such and such a part of the first movement." So he then pulled out his violin, and said, "In minsk, we played it this way." An he started playing the part in the first movement. Boy, was Stern shocked!!!
