[net.music.classical] Aesthetics

A friend of mine needs to write a paper for an aesthetics class he is taking
(senior - "pre-seminary" degree). The requirements of the paper are
that he must read a (preferably current) book (i.e. "substantial work")
on aesthetics and examine/critic/evaluate the author's ideas. Since my
friend's earlier background is classical music , he would like his paper
to concentrate on music. His colleague at school suggested
"Goedel, Escher, Bach", but after talking to him about it, we decided that
Hopfstadter (sp?) is too long on math and too short on Bach.

Any suggestions? Post or mail appropriately is fine.

Thanks,
