I was reading the classical music news today and was reminded of a question
a friend posed to me several days ago. How do you spell Mr. K_____'s
name--i.e. the chap that listed and classified all Mozart's works.
After Mozart's works there's always a KV number , someone Verzeichnis.
I know what a verzeichnis is but don't recall Mr. K's real name and how to
get some information about him. Where would one find this out?
Thanks in advance,

Re: Mozart's KV: That's KOECHEL (OE standing for o umlaut). The British wag Michael Flanders used to refer to the Koechel number as the Koechel rating. Veddy dry.

The K. stands for Koechel, who was a musicologist before some wise guy
invented the word and ruined the whole concept. :-)

PS. Does anyone know the source of the quote, "Musicology!? You may as well
talk about grandmotherology!!" (or something like that)benk@inmet.UUCP (02/23/85)
The 'K' in 'K.V.' stands for 'Koechel'. The 'oe' should
*realy* be o-umluat, but there isn't an umlaut in the
ascii character set ( a fatal deficiency, if you ask me ).
You could have probably found this out by consulting the
"Harvard Dictionary of Music" or "Grove's Dictionary
of Music and Musicians".

The name of the cataloguer is Kochel with " over the o.
