_ Does anyone know if Bach's Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue in D Minor for harpsichord originated from an unaccompanied violin piece, or if any specu- lation to this effect exists? Thing is, they both sound doable on a violin with essentially no modification in the Fantasy and not much modification in the Fugue. Considering that Bach rescored many other violin works (and works for other instruments) as harpsichord pieces, this seems somewhat likely. Does anyone have any opinions on this? Also, if my suspicion of violin origin of this piece has any grounds, does anyone know of any recordings of the piece done on the violin, or for that matter of availability of the score for the music? (I play the violin, although not very well, and would like to get this if it exists to save me the work of rescoring it from the recording of the harpsichord piece myself. I think the Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue is one of Bach's more original and brilliant pieces, from one of the most original and brilliant of composers, but I cannot play the harpsichord.) -- Lucius Chiaraviglio seismo!tardis!lucius lucius@tardis.ARPA
