I believe today (April,2nd) is the anniversary of the first performance of Beethoven's Symphony #1 in the year 1800. Let us not forget the other big "B" in the year of Bach! - Ken Dykes Software Development Group, U. of Waterloo Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. N2L 3G1 {clyde, utzoo}!watmath!water!watbun!kgdykes

I am reminded of a performance of Beethoven's First given two or three years ago by Michael Tilson Thomas at the Hollywood Bowl, where, after the very quiet second movement, someone in the audience stood up and yelled in a deep reverberating voice: "If you wish to be heard, you'll have to play louder." M.T.T. turned to the audience, walked up to one of the michrophones on stage, and said: "We've been practicing our pianissimo for years and are still trying to make it softer!". The audience responded with resounding applause, and the symphony was continued as if without a break. -- David I.
