I would dearly love a good recording of Beethoven's Choral 9th. Can anyone suggest a record label, conductor, or symphony that does an outstanding 9th? Alas, I have no CD, so vinyl will have to do. Please reply by mail, I'll post to the net if interest warrants it. Thanks in advance Brian Atkins ...{attunix, hao, allegra, ucbvax}!nbires!atkins "But I'm not dead yet..." - M.P.

I am a fan of the last Karl Bohm/Vienna Philharmonic recording of this work, DG 2741 009. In fact, this is the last recording Bohm made, period. Soloists are Jessye Norman, Brigitte Fassbaender, Placido Domingo, and Walter Berry, and the Vienna State Opera concert choir provides backup vocals. I heard Karajan's latest Ninth the other day; I'm afraid he's losing it in his old age... Bill Palmer whp4@su-sierra.arpa path: what's that?

You can get an excellent Boehm/Wiener Philharmoniker recording of the 9th as well as the other eight (!!!) from the International Preview Society for about $10 by joining as a new subscriber. My favorite is still von Karajan/Berliner Philharmoniker DG 2563 027. Enjoy! -- ---------------- R J Morgan uw-beaver!tikal!pyrcorp!rmorgan ----------------

In addition to being a very good recording in the orchestral sense (the vocal soloists don't do a particularly good, job, though), it is one of the the great Wagnerian conductor's last recordings. It is in re-release on Seraphim. --Nick Cuccia --{...}!ucbvax!cuccia PS: My favorite is also the von Karajan above. Also, I am currently singing the piece with the UC Glee Club, University Chorus, and University Symphony. Anybody know some recordings that don't sound like 'music-minus-one' recordings with the chorus tenor part missing (high As forever...)?
