My views of some rather moving/inspirational works: (not necessarily listed in order of preference) Beethoven: String Quartet, Op. 131 (LaSalle Quartet version on DG) Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 in D "Choral" (I have the 1960's vintage Bernstein/NY Philharmonic - performance is not bad if you can hack the CBS surface noise.) Mozart: Requiem, K.626 (Marriner on Argo) Mozart: Symphony No. 40 Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto No. 1 Bach: Many of the organ fugues - there is a certain MAJESTY and POWER to his organ music, especially when played on a large instrument. Virgil Fox made two direct-to-disk recordings for Crystal Clear "The Fox Touch vols 1 & 2" on the organ of the Garden Grove Community Church which are VERY awe-inspiring. Mahler: Symphonies 2 "Resurrection" and 8 "Symphony of a Thousand" (Solti/Chicago on London) Admittedly, this is not a complete list, but some of my thoughts on the subject. I am surprised that I haven't seen anybody mention Schubert. Among the most wonderful pieces of music that I have ever listened to, my favorite piece (although very many others come extremely close) is Schubert's Quintet in C (no, not the Trout). Others include (but are not limited to): Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis (Vaughn Williams) the "Emperor" piano concerto (Beethoven) Violin Concerto (Ysaye) "American" string quartet (Dvorak) "Kreutzer" sonate (Beethoven) Rite Of Spring (Stravinsky) Scherezade (Rimsy-Korsakov) Violin Concerto (Sibelius) Missa Solemnis (Beethoven) Symphony Fantastique (Berlioz) Double Concerto in D minor (Bach) St. Matthew Passion (Bach) Ave Maria (Schubert) I can't think of any more offhand, but anyone who likes can start off with these. I think that for me to even like a piece of music, it has to be "inspirational", although I don't think that's the word I would use. How about "so beautiful it scares the hell out of you". Anyway, just this weekend I was especially impressed by the Mahler song "Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen". Almost makes you want to consider suicide. How's that for inspirational? :-) Quick - get me some beer to cry in, Jeff Winslow
