This may be the wrong place for this request, but I'm new to the net, so here goes... Does anybody out there in netland have any information (pointers will do) about bank cards? I'm talking about the ones with magnetic stripes that you use in an automatic teller machine, as well as credit cards in general. What I'd like to know is the following: - What is on the stripe, and in what format? - Is there any information content in the number on the front, or are they just randomly assigned? (Check digits are not of interest.) - How do automatic teller machines and point- of-sale credit card readers talk to the host? (Protocols, networks, etc) I'm not interested in flames about the banking industry, reminiscences on personal experiences with dehumanizing machines, or credit card rip-off schemes. Just hard facts, please. Respond by mail to ...hogpc!pegasus!lzmi!ziegler and if there's sufficient interest I'll summarize to the net in a couple of weeks. Thanks.
