[net.music.classical] Beethoven's Ninth

janzen@pipa.DEC (Thomas E. J. LMO4/B5 279-5421 ECL Test) (04/18/85)

There's a wonderful recording of Beethoven's Ninth transcribed for piano
solo by Franz Liszt. It's a digital black vinyl recording. don't remember
the piano player.

Franz Liszt transcribed all of Beethoven's symphonies for piano.
I have a copy of the Sixth by Cyprien Kyrakous (or something like that)
and it is an interesting and pleasurable experience to hear the piano
interpretation. I would love to hear the other symphonies on piano
as well.

Glenn Gould has a recording of this transcription on (What else but..)
CBS Masterworks. Haven't had the guts to listen to it yet...

With Glenn Gould I would expect to get a combined piano and
choral version. :-)

This is available on CD as well and is quite enjoyable.

The same pianist has a CD recording of Liszt's transcription
of Beethoven's 9th. Also, there's a Columbia recording of
Glenn Gould playing Liszt's transcription of Beethoven's 5th.
Not only is it interesting listening, but the liner notes
alone are worth the price.

I have a recording of this transcription on CD. My copy was played by
Cypron Kyrstas (I think that's the name, anyway) on the ``Mark Allen Concert
Grand #1''. It's pressed by Teldec, and I bought it through MHS at their
standard ridiculous price of $16.99 (it's $23.99 for people who don't get
the catalog/purchase subsrciption).

A virtuoso transcription: Kyrstas actually fills in a few melodic lines that
Liszt left out. And an impressive piece of music, though the finale is
not quite up to the rest of the work. The first three movemnts are a joy,
though.

As long as lots of people are talking about the ninth, I'd like to ask a
question.
Does anybody know any good recordings of it that include all repeats?
Specifically, most conductors leave out the repeat in the second movement
35 measures after letter K. (That's a big repeat back to almost the beginning.)
I really like that ending, and I notice when it isn't there.
The only (commercial) recording I have that has the first ending is the
Toscanini with Eileen Farrell, Nan Merriman, Jan Peerce, Norman Scott, and
the Robert Shaw Chorale.
I know the following recordings skip the first ending:
--- L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Ernest Ansermet ...
--- Wiener Philharmoniker, Leonard Bernstein ...

Is this true???
I thought Liszt only did three (or four) of them. He worked on and
off on the 9th for years, and was never really satisfied.
My memory of this is a bit fuzzy.
There are piano transcriptions of the 9 symphonies by others.
If anyone knows of Liszt transcriptions I would love to hear about them,
as well as info about recordings and/or scores.
	I have the recording Gordon refers to and it is very good;
especially the Pastoral.
