[net.music.classical] Schoenberg's opera

ckk@cmu-cs-g.ARPA (Chris Koenigsberg) (07/14/85)

I saw a film version of Shoenberg's opera "Moses and Aaron" last night.
The story is really stupid, Moses and the Jews and all that crap,
but the music is amazing. Has anyone else seen this flick? It was
made in 1975, in German, with English subtitles.

Yes, I've seen it too. My opinion is that the story is OK, but the staging
and acting were unbelievably ridiculous. Example - in one scene, people
are supposed to be going crazy with drink, or something, and fall off a cliff
in their drunkenness. The actions of the "actors" make it clear they only
jumped down about three feet. And you see these people later on in the
film, too. A little early for any Resurrections, I think.

The music *is* pretty amazing. I've never really gotten into it, but may
someday. More power to you.

Regardless of the content of the film (which I have not seen), the story of
Moses and the Jews is not stupid and is not crap! I resent the implication
of your posting! If you wish to criticize the film, choose your language so
as not to debase the origin of the story.

.....and, to the rest of you netters, please pardon the flame.
