Don't overlook Sibelius's songs. Perhaps the language problem is the reason they are not as well known as they deserve to be. To convert any skeptics, I recommend a recording (a London reissue, I think) of Flagstad singing Sibelius songs with orchestra. Richard Carnes

<a line-eaters job is never finnish'd> I agree about Sibelius' songs. Another possibility for recordings of his songs are by Jorma Hyninin (sp? - think its close). I went to a concert at Carnegie Hall last year where he did some Finnish songs, about half of which were by Sibelius and several of which are equal to any songs in the lieder literature. Very good voice (baritone) and very good interpretations. I think that Tom Krause also has done some of Sibelius' songs on London. Dewayne Perry
