[net.music.classical] Copland on TV and 20th Century music

hsut@pur-ee.UUCP (Bill Hsu) (10/17/85)

Did anyone catch the Copland special on PBS on October 10? The
numerous stories and guests made it very entertaining. There was probably
an over-emphasis on Copland's "popular" works like Rodeo and Appalachian
Spring. I would like to see more material on the lesser known stuff.
(There was a nice clip of Michael Tilson Thomas playing the Piano
Variations; I must get it sometime...)

Near the end, there was a scene where Copland was listening
to a young string quartet playing a really beautiful piece. Is that
Copland's music also? What piece is it?

From the postings on this net, I would assume that most
people reading this group are interested in more traditional classical
music. Is anyone into the 20th century stuff like Berg, Crumb,
Penderecki, at all? Has anyone heard Steve Reich's new album?
