I will prepare a bibliography of 20th century quartets. until then, i forgot Ruth Porter Crawford Seeger's Quartet 1931 or so. Absolutely first-rate disciplined personal expression and innovative writing. You've never heard anything like it. Tom Posted: Mon 21-Oct-1985 13:19 EST To: @CLASSICAL

I only have two minutes to post this. I just read the interesting bibliography of string quartets on this newsgroup. Some interesing examples were left out, namely, quartets by: Mahler and Bruckner (yes) Delius Frank Bridge Britten Nielsen (wrote 4, I think) Shostakovich (wrote ~12 excellent quartets, not just one) There is an excellent, new recording on London of the Sibelius and Delius quartets. The Fitzwilliam Quartet has recorded all or most of Shostakovich's quartets on l'Oiseau-Lyre and they are great recordings.
