What to post to net.mag? We would mainly like to see TOCs (Table of Contents) of magazines and journals of the computer and other technical areas, as they appear in print. Where a journal covers a very specialized area only, for which a seperate news-group exists, the article should be posted there only. For example the ACM Sigplan should be covered in "net.lang", not here. If a magazine covers a wide spectrum of interests, like Scientific American does, it should be posted here. If it contains an article which may be of interest to some special interest group, which has a seperate news-group, it may be indicated to post it to that group also. As, for the time being, no subgroups exist for discussion of articles, authors, or other aspects of a magazine or journal, anyone interested to discuss such a topic is welcome to post here. If such traffic becomes a substantial part of the total on this group, we might then want to split the group into seperate groups for TOCs and discussions, as it may seem desirable to the net-community at that time. Suggestions about the format of an article PLEASE, the Subject-line should clearly identify the contents of your article. Using keywords, like "TOC, Abstract, Comment, Flame, Question, RE: ..", is essential to make reading a group more enjoyable. For example: TOC 84/3 Scientific American is a brief and clear Subject-line Legal Caveat Please respect Copyrights and give proper credits and references. Whereas it seems proper and legal to make the reading of a journal or magazine unneccessary with a condensed summary, quoting long passages verbatim may not be. Our purpose should not be to make reading of the magazines unneccessary, but rather to help identify the issues and articles which we are interested in and which we might have missed had they not been brought to our attention here. And when you feel the urge to "flame", remember "net.flames" and /dev/null as proper targets.
