Communications of the ACM
A monthly publication of the Association for Computing Machinery
	May 1984	Volume 27, Number 5	ACM HQ:	11 West 42nd Street
							New York, NY 10036

REPORTS AND ARTICLES
422	The Legal Protection of Computer Software, Robert L. Graham
:	Legal controversy still surrounds the issue of providing
		meaningful protection for commercial software.

428	Accomodating Uncertainty in Software Design, Richard V. Giddings
:	The recognition that most software is domain dependent means
that a new approach to software design is in order.

435	Self-Assessment Procedure XIII, G.K.Gupta
:	A self-assessment procedure dealing with binary search
		trees and B-trees.

COMPUTING PRACTICES
444	A Virtual Memory System for Picture Processing, Ben Tsutom Wada
:	A system designed specifically for picture processing
features blockwise partitioning, specific purpose frame
		allocation, and nondemand page replacement.

455	An Algorithm for Optimized Boolean Evaluation in Information
	Management Systems, Gerard D. Finn
:	In cases where simple data validation techniques are
inadequate and optimization policies relatively complex,
this algorithm can be used to report errors accurately
		and unambiguously.

RESEARCH CONTRIBUTIONS
466	Evolution and Organizational Information Systems: An Assessment
of Nolan's Stage Model, John L. King and Kenneth L. Kraemer
:	Richard Nolan's "stage" model of organizational computer
growth is shown to be "evolutionistic" and to suffer
		problems inherent in such theories.

476	A Critique of the Stage Hypothesis: Theory and Empirical Evidence,
Izak Benbasat, Albert S. Dexter, Donald H. Drury, Robert C. Goldstein
:	The empirical evidence from seven studies does not support
the validity of the stage hypothesis as a model of
		organizational computing growth.

486	Design of the S System for Data Analysis, Richard A. Becker and
	John M. Chambers
:	A language for interactive data analysis and graphical output,
S differs sharply from other statistical systems in its
emphasis on human effectiveness as the most important design
		criteria.
