The July 21, 1986 issue of The New Yorker includes an excellent article (part 1 of 2) by Frances FitzGerald on the development, politically and socially, of San Francisco as a gay center, and on the growth of the gay liberation movement. It's a very well-written, in-depth article that (so far) includes commentary on the Gay Freedom Day Parade of 1978; the Advocate; Armistead Maupin; Harvey Milk/Dan White/twinkie defense; and many other topics. If you're interested in gay culture, California politics, miscarriages of justice, or excellent writing, read this article. -- marlene bloch, calif state univ northridge, school of engineering and comp sci uucp: {sdcrdcf, ihnp4, hplabs, ttidca, psivax, csustan}!csun!afcscmar
