[net.misc] DP heading for greener pastures

riddle@ut-sally.UUCP (09/26/83)

According to an article in the September '83 issue of Atlantic
Monthly, the data processing industry is following in the footsteps
of asbestos, textiles and microprocessors and moving south in search
of a workforce happy with low wages and poor working conditions. The
article says that "Gary Bechtel, head of a data-processing company in
New Jersey ... is moving ahead with his plan to set up a keypunch
operation in Jamaica." Does anyone know if this is a new phenomenon
or if it's been going on for some time now? Data entry being the
sweatshop industry of the 80's, I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
