[net.net-people] TELENET to SIMTEL site needed

abh@ccivax.UUCP (A. Hudson) (06/06/84)

Does anyone have a list of valid TELENET locations and their site IDs?
Specifically, we are looking for access to the SIMTEL 20 machine at MIT.
I have a feeling that this is guarded information, but not knowing
the status of TELENET's philosophy on data access I'm asking anyway.
Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

Sorry, SIMTEL20 is NOT at MIT (unless there has been a lot of geographic
shuffling going on in secret!); it is at White Sands Missle Range in
sunny New Mexico. It is a MILNET host, reachable through the ARPANET.
(You may have used an MIT gateway into the ARPANET, which
would explain why you thought the locations were congruent.)

ARPA/MILNET sites connect directly over the high-speed data lines,
regardless of physical location, so a New Mexican site is just as
"next-door" to MIT as one physically located in the next building.
