[net.net-people] A comment on Censorship: A Case History

welsch@houxu.UUCP (05/13/84)

I found Tim Maroney's series of articles most illuminating and I am
surprised no one has commented on them. I would be most interested in
hearing what Capt. Ralph A. Mason, Tim Seaver, Steven Bellovin, and
Frederick P. Brooks Jr. have to say.

I, too, found Tim's case history interesting and disturbing... I think they
are giving him the shaft, and I would like to see a little fairness on their
parts. UUCP-net is by nature an informal and relaxed forum, and it is almost
as important to be able to "get to know" our colleagues as it is to just
provide and seek information. I am much more likely to bend over backward for
a "personality" I like on the net than for some miscellaneous person wanting
some obscure piece of information. I happend to think that Tim Maroney adds
much to the quality of life on the net. What can we do to help, Tim???

I, too, found the Five-Part series interesting and a poor reflection
on the staff of UNC. I had sent a letter to Brooks at UNC but have
since retracted it, as I didn't feel appropriate to deliver my ire to
him at this time.

Neither the original letter nor the retraction have been responded to.

... and just what do you suppose has since happened to unc!tim (that is,
his account at unc)?

I also found the material very interesting. For my part, I intend
to boycott UNC and say nasty things about them frequently. It's
quite obvious that they do not qualify as a real university, and
I will take care to avoid the place...

Looks like the old IBM'er in Fred Brooks isn't all dead.
