<> The Roland MPU-401 is an "intelligent" interface for connecting MIDI instruments to home computers. The front panel of the MPU-401 contains: 1 MIDI IN 2 MIDI OUT 1 SYNCH OUT TAPE SYNC IN TAPE SYNC OUT METRONOME OUT (audio) The back of the MPU-401 has a standard DB-25 connector for hook-up to a Roland Interface card. Cards are available for the APPLE ][+, //e, IBM PC, and (soon) Commodore 64. The MPU-401 is capable of recording and timing up to 8 tracks of MIDI information. A ninth timer is provided for expansion to other non-MIDI events such as graphics, text, or "conducting" of the MPU-401 overall. An audio metronome with both an internal speaker and audio out plug is provided to assist in creating accurate tracks. The metronome is capable of producing accents which can be set to any meter or time signature. List on the MPU-401 is $200, the interface cards are $110 each. The Roland unit is designed using an HD6801V0A74P CPU and an HD61J22F LSI hand-shake controller for the MIDI bus system. This interface connects to the HOST computer via the DATA BUS and uses handshaking and interrupts.
