I am trying to contact people at Trento, Italy. I know that their vax is on a network called "bitnet". Can someone suggest some possible routings that I might use to make contact with them ??

BITNET is a network of computers, many manufactured by IBM, connected together using RSCS. BITNET is essentially an external (to IBM) version of VNET (Xref: seismo net.mail:976 net.net-people:741), the internal IBM network. There are Vaxen running Unix on this network (using UREP, software developed at Penn State) and Vaxen running VMS (most using JNET, marketed by Joiner Associates). EARN (or EARNET) is just the European portion of BITNET, so however one gets mail to a BITNET site, that's how one gets mail to an EARN site. As for gateways, appended is information from a "NAMES FILE " (of the VM/CMS flavor) on the two "canonical" gateways to BITNET. The UUCP gateway is psuvax1.UUCP. The ARPANet and CSNet gateway is at the University of Wisconsin, uwisc.ARPA or wisconsin.CSNET. The format is :<variable name>.<variable value> so that the nodenum (node number) of the psuvax1 site is 0070. As an example, something like ...allegra!psuvax1!josh%yktvmh.BITNET or josh%yktvmh.BITNET@uwisc.ARPA or josh%yktvmh.BITNET@wisconsin.CSNET should all work to get mail to me. Mark Starner provided essentially similar information about the psuvax1 gateway in January <1599@psuvax1.UUCP>. As for Italians in Trento, try asking Aldo Montaguti, amt0@icineca.BITNET, or from UUCP land ...allegra!psuvax1!amt0%icineca.BITNET. Of course all this information is supplied by just me (not IBM) and even I (not to mention IBM) make no representation that the information supplied is correct, complete or up-to-date.
