[net.net-people] Mail addressing to People

ggr@packard.UUCP (Guy Riddle) (09/23/85)

) There isn't any way for ihnp4 to know that ihnp4!horton is actually
) ihnp4!cbosgd!mark, especially if thefre is a horton on ihnp4. However,
) if there isn't, I suppose this simple scheme can be used when you only
) know the last name.

Down here on packard, you can send to

	packard!.horton

if you have no initials available. [I wouldn't suggest this as a good
address for Mark, since there is more than one Horton around -- you will
get a message back informing you of the ambiguity and giving you a list
of names to choose from.]

) Gary and Mark, is this currently done from outside AT&T? I know it's
) done internally.

If you mean "is it available from outside AT&T", the answer is yes
(I'm speaking of the name server interface on packard) -- feel free to
use it (for reaching AT&T Bell Laboratories employees, of course).
[It probably won't break at the same time ihnp4's does (ihnp4's is
kaput at the moment) since it relies on a different mechanism.]

P.S. If you have trouble sending to "packard!A.Person" it might be
because the electronic address is out of date (the updating of the
electronic address is voluntary, you see). You can force the message to
be sent by Company Mail by sending to "packard!A.User/paper" -- these
 addresses are "always" correct.
