[net.net-people] Apology to Terry Ridder

bandy@lll-crg.ARpA (Andrew Scott Beals) (11/19/85)

I would like to take this opportunity to formally extend my
apologies to Terry L. Ridder (tlr@mimsy.umd.edu) and his family for
insinuating that their home machines (bilbo and wiretap) and any
association with any Federal agency (the NSA in this case).

To pilot which you did not need to--
  You just pushed a button,
  And it would leave nuttin'
But stiffs and big holes and debris, too.

Hi,

I'm still really trying hard to figure out how someone at Grinnell
college would go about sending mail to me. Or anyone on the ARPA/EDU net(s).
And if some kind soul out there in the UseNet-void has even the faintest
idea (or would just like to send a condolence message, as things look pretty
grim re: my success in this endeavor), I'd love to hear from you.

And I can be reached at:	korn@Berkeley.EDU
				!ucbvax!korn
And sometime even doing my homework, though that's pretty unlikely, what
with finals comming up fairly soon.

and even then there's some room for doubt).

Hey, Terry,

I know for a fact that "bilbo" already exists. There's an NCR Tower in
the basement of the Engineering Quad at Princeton Univ. named "bilbo"
in honor of the President of the University, the man who got us the
grant that got us the machine -- William (Bill) Bowen.

Seems to me, you've got two choices:

Rename your machine (for the sake of those who want to send mail to
bilbo!terry and use pathalias) or establish your own sub-domain
(for the sake of domain-based mailers) so we can all send mail
to terry@bilbo.!ARPA.TERRY'S-HOUSE.

(Does RFC822 allows 's in domain-names? Maybe BASEMENT might be a better
name.)
