Here's a response I received re: my question about New Zealand sites. Since NZ's not yet directly on the net, I'm taking the liberty of posting this for the general edification of us all. ********************************************************************* Received: from ucbvax.Berkeley.EDU by ucbamber.Berkeley.Edu (4.19/5.6) id AA13161; Tue, 29 Jul 86 00:34:17 pdt Received: by ucbvax.Berkeley.EDU (5.53/1.14) id AA09908; Tue, 29 Jul 86 00:33:56 PDT Message-Id: <8607290733.AA09908@ucbvax.Berkeley.EDU> Received: from waterloo by csnet-relay.csnet id aa05640; 29 Jul 86 3:38 EDT Received: from cantuar.uucp by watmath; Tue, 29 Jul 86 02:39:52 edt Date: Tue, 29 Jul 86 18:32:12+1200 From: "R.L.Biddle" <robert%cantuar.waterloo.edu@csnet-relay.arpa> To: envsci <@csnet-relay.arpa,@watmath.waterloo.edu:envsci@ucbamber.berkeley.edu> Subject: Kia Ora Greetings, Kia Ora, Gidday! In reply to your question about New Zealand net sites: At the moment, there are two New Zealand Unix sites in communication with the world. One is us, the Computer Science Department of the University of Canterbury, in Christchurch. The other is the Computer Science Department at Victoria University of Wellington. We have daily exchanges with the University of Waterloo in Canada, and Vic have daily exchanges with the University of Melbourne in Australia, and with the University of Calgary in Canada. We are "cantuar", Vic are "vuw90x". The cantuar!watmath connection is uucp-f a direct line from our Vax750 to our Computer Centre's Prime750, thence X.25 The vuw90x!calgary connection is uucp-f a modem connection from their Pyramid to a PTT pad, thence X.25 The vuw90x!munnari connection is acsnet (SunIII) again via modem to pad. Because of the PTT pad connection, Vic cannot handle large messages. All connections are mail only at the moment. The plan is to get Usenet news from Australia, but the arrangements were started at Vic, but have stalled until they get a proper X.25 facility. We have the acsnet software too, but have been waiting for Vic. Other sites have expressed interest, but little else has happened. There is a lot of concern about which way to look in wide-area networking here, to Europe and CCITT directions, or to North Am and Unix&Darpa directions. We are interested in advice and suggestions! Many people are surprised we go direct to such distant locations in what connections we do have: there is no point going to the Northern Hemisphere in jumps - it will just cost more, nobody happily forwards mail free around here! And once you make a long jump, the economies are sometimes weird. Did you know it's cheaper for us to phone Newfoundland (or the U.K.) than Hawaii? And it's happiest to deal with friends. Anyway, the links are very very new. I'll see if you get this before saying more. Our only link with the news at the moment is that friends direct important postings (like yours!) via electronic or physical mail. We wish there was some facility whereby we could subscribe to topic lines only, and retrieve what we want. Over to you, and thank you for asking. *********************************************************************
