Let me simply quote without comment a letter that appeared in an Atlanta newspaper a few years ago when the state legislature was considering a scientific creationism bill: An angel appeared to me in a dream and said, "Mary, two and two is five." I believe this was a sign from God. I have a problem, though. In school, they teach only one theory of two-plus-twoism, and that is "two plus two equals four." I believe that this is not fair to people whose religion requires them to believe that two plus two equals five. We have to explain to our children that what they learn in math class goes against God's word as She has revealed it to us. Therefore, I am making an appeal to the Georgia legislature to pass a law that requires that they teach both theories of two-plus-twoism. Whenever the teacher says that two plus two equals four, she must also say that two plus two equals five. Of course, she would have the option not to mention two plus two at all. Mary G. The flaw in the slaw is that the teaching of uniform arithmetical concepts is an A Priori agreed upon idea in the society where you live that is necessary for day to day operations. If I have my checking account at Bozo Bank and Trust Co. up in Shakerag, Ga. and I keep track of my money with 2 + 2 = 5, well there's going to be a problem. However, whether I believe I came from slime or my origins are divine will have no practical effect on me or the teller when I stand at his/her window to cash my check.
