[net.misc] Why do they drive on the left in Japan?

With the discussion of whether or not people walk on the left in England, I
am reminded of a related question.

Last Spring I was in Japan for the first time. Until then, I never knew that
the Japanese drive on the left side of the road. Does anyone know why? The
influence of the British in Japan was not that great. In Hong Kong or other
former British Colonies, it would make sense, but Japan?

Interestingly, in the People's Republic of China, they drive on the right
side of the road.

as ever confused,
