Are there any NUMBalums in net-land? I have wondered where people like us
might end up the 364 days of the year we aren't paying homage at Dyche. All
the `official' communication, of course, still goes through the NUMB office,
and NUMBalum stuff is handled by Mrs. Paynter. I have no interest in
starting a formal alumni organization. But still, how about starting
something informal via this medium, between the (probably) small subset of
the NUMBalum population that is on this net? Please respond to me by direct
mail, and don't post followups, since I am reasonably confident that the
rest of the net is completely uninterested in our rambling reminiscences.
I have some (implicit) questions you may want to respond to, just to prime
the pump. I am most interested in constructing a lineage of the Grinder and
Spirit Leader and their Hats, so information along those lines would be most
helpful. Also, if you remember the names of the assistant directors, maybe
we could run a trivia contest someday. I'll offer typical answers (mine)
when I feel like it. Please fill in the blanks with your own info. If you
think of any other subject areas I missed that you think others may be
interested in, please include them in your responses.
I am Bob Sutterfield.
I was a NUMBer in the 1978-1982 seasons.
I played baritone for the first four, then was conned into switching to
Sousaphone the last year. Dumbest decision I ever made; great fun!
During my tenure:
Directors: 1978 JPP and Bill (Baah) Hochkeppel
1979-81 Don (Squint) Casey and Don (Braindamage) Owens
1982 Don (Turkey Duck) Owens and Dale (Dimes) Lonis
Drum Majors: 1978-81 Parris Sanders
1982 Clark Rundell
Spirit Leaders: 1978 Pete Friedman clarinet
1979 Rick Foster trombone
1980 Bobby Jack Mitchell trombone
1981 Cosmic Ray Schwarzkopf percussion
1982 Gary Cooke alto sax
Grinders: 1978-79 Jeff Baker baritone
1980-81 Bob Sutterfield baritone
1982 Tom Zamojcin tenor sax
Most memorable show: Ohio State, 1978, when our digital watch, `Roses' diamond
drill and `Got To Get' suicide drill dropped the OSU directors' jaws.
Most memorable moment: Arkansas, 1981, when the entire Razorback crowd stood
silently while we sang our Alma Mater during Pregame. A real classy
demonstration, unlike I've seen anywhere in the Big 10. Thanks, Hogs!
No, I haven't quite yet married from within NUMB. Maybe soon, we hope...
My musical activities since NUMB (besides marching with the NUMBalums) are
mostly confined to picking five-string bluegrass banjo.
Professional and church activities keep me too busy for much else.
(I assume that most NUMBalums on this net would not have gone into
the music profession... Surprise me!)
What I've been doing since leaving NU would take a while to describe, and is
currently in flux. Stay tuned...
Well, there's a set of sample (implicit) questions. If you are a netted
NUMBalum, why not respond in kind? If you know of others who may not see
this, and may be interested in getting involved, let them know. Other
special-interest groups have their good-old-boy networks; what better way to
construct ours than via an already-existing network which we already use? I
will serve as clearing-house for mail forwarding, unless there happen to be
so many of us that we should form our own newsgroup (net.music.NUMB-only?)

PS If there is still anybody reading who doesn't know what I'm talking
about, I admire your patience and perserverence. Sorry to have
taken up your time. I would have n'ed it, if I were in your seat.
Anyway, NUMB is the Northwestern University (Wildcat) Marching Band;
JPP is John P. Paynter, a most revered and respected musician,
arranger, conductor, band director, and mass psychologist; P&G is
Paynter & God, in that order. :-) Or Pride & Glory, or Pain and Guts.
You can take your pick.
