Seen on a help-wanted flyer from Cray Research:

We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer - m/f/h/v

"v"?? For "virgin", perhaps?

    Just Guessing,
	Michael Turner (ucbvax!ucbesvax.turner)

One of my friends had trouble with this one, too. He wondered whether since
m = male, f = female, h = homosexual?

(H = Handicapped, V = Veteran)

Nah, it's male - female - human - vegan, right?

Of course m/f/h/v is for male - female - human - Vegan. Not many
of you humans (and other assorted beings using the net) are aware of
the subtle prejudice that is directed towards us Vegans. We are a
minority here (very few of us come to this backwater, primative
world voluntarily unless it is for academic credit) and get treated
very badly.

When you had a crummy little car that exploded on impact, who did
you name it after? The "Vega." You've never named a car
"The Poland" or the "Puerto Rico" now, have you?

If you make jokes about shoddy merchandise on TV, what do you
single out? The "Vega"-matic.

There are too many other examples to view it as a coincidence.
I am glad that laura has the sensitivity to realize what m/f/h/v
stands for, and I'm glad to see some employers taking a stand.
Anyone who's given us a chance realizes what a stellar worker
a Vegan is likely to be.

WRONG WRONG WRONG!
Who said the "vega" explodes upon impact. It was the "pinto".

Are you sure you don't mean VOGON? :-)

walsh@ihuxi.UUCP (11/08/83)

You're right, Barry! The vega just RUSTS upon impact!

m/f/h/v - male/female/hedonist/vegetarian

Cray being based in that hotbed of hedonistic vegetarianism called
California, this was probably the intended meaning.

Now, I know that given m/f, I'm only allowed to pick one or the other.
Since it doesn't make senses to change the meaning of an operator (in
this case /, exclusive or) in the middle of an expression, having
m/f/h/v mean male/female/handicapped/veteran should mean you can only
be one of the above. Since, as far as I can tell, one can be both
female and handicapped AND a veteran, this precludes h and v being
handicapped and veteran, respectively. Mutant/famished/heavy/vesicular
is also out, as one could be both mutated and hungry. Any XORable
suggestions?

Hey Rene:

I can only XOR three of them:

male/female/hermaphrodite/???

Do Vegans have gender?

B. Walsh

res@cbosgd.UUCP (11/12/83)

Let's put this discussion to rest. The expression m/f/h/v is used
as part of a standard statement on ads for jobs in order to denote
that the firm is an equal opportunity employer. The m/f/h/v
implies that the firm promotes equal employment opportunities
with regards to:

	m - minorities
	f - females
	h - the handicapped
	v - veterans

I have no idea if this statement has any legal connotations, or
whether it is a product of evolution. It certainly seems that
m/f/h/v followed m/f/h, which was originally m/f. If someone really
knows the origins I would appreciate a reply. But, really, haven't
we hacked this issue to death?

Since m/f includes everyone (whether m is "male" or "minority", since
males are a minority) why specify any other groups? Why specify any
groups at all, since equal opportunity should imply they treat everyone
equally? Maybe they should list the names of everyone alive and say
that they discriminate against none of these people.

spaf@gatech.UUCP (11/14/83)

B. Walsh asks if Vegans have gender. The answer is definitely "yes."
Gender is a differentiation amongst the various roles needed in sexual
reproduction within a species...or lack of roles in the case of asexual
reproduction. Thus, lack of sex in reproduction implies a single
gender and a distinct lack of excitement on weekends, as you will no
doubt discover on any date with a Xerox machine.

If we examine the four major genders of which you earthlings are aware
(male sex, female sex, insects, and religious sects) it is difficult to
note the roles played by each in the reproductive cycle. This also
doesn't take into account the activities of individuals like Catherine
the Great, Larry Flynt, and members of Congress.

Vegans recognize approximately 73,241 genders (as of last count). At
puberty, each young hatchling undergoes the "maturity ritual" whereby
they choose a name, and a gender is registered. This is accomplished
through a rather complicated ritual involving 2 Neptunians, a toaster
oven, a catcher's mitt, an Emperor penguin, 3 pine cones and a
bilingual moose. This is roughly equivalent to a Bar Mitzveh, but with
considerably more trauma to the moose. Once the ceremony is through
and we have established our identity, we spend the next few hundred
years attempting to determine just what the "opposite sex" really is,
and then find a date for the annual office party. Until that time,
most of us either settle for the moose or the catcher's mitt, although
a few deviants have been seen consorting with used car salesmen.

I hope this helps clear up the matter.

As a former Vega owner (much to my dismay), I can tell you that while the
Vega will not explode upon being tailgated, it will eat oil like no other
glutton. Yes, it will rust, and I hear Vegas have the tendency to overturn
upon contact. In short, the h and the v are equivalent, standing for
"handicapped" and "Vega Owner".

PS: just so you logicians don't bother flaming, I'll correct myself:
    rather than h <==> v, v ==> h.  OK?
