Other workers were unable to repeat the results, and this spurred further study of the experiment. It seems that the authors actually *started* with *two* "cryptic" species of Drosophila and merely succeded in using selection to establish *visible* differences between them in the lab. With that date, I rather think it must be the one I am thinking of, since I have heard of no other experiment claiming such results, and that was while I was still in college and keeping up-to-date on such matters.
