Dear Mr Holden, I have been reading your postings with interest and enjoyment. There is, however, (at least) one aspect of your articles about which I find myself somewhat disturbed. This is that you seem to hold the sentiment that you would like to see your adversaries ground into the earth. I can certainly understand your trepidation regarding the acceptance of evolution, Darwinian or otherwise. I cannot go along with the delight that the ignominious defeat of the evolutionists would apparently give you, as exemplified, e.g., in the following: > I love this one! The creatures Mr. Jefferys has in > mind include several which I wouldn't want to face > with anything less than a 50 caliber machine gun. > My favorite ancient animal is the pteratorn... > ...In a way, it's a shame pteratorns are > extinct. I really feel the guys at the UT > astronomy department deserve a shot at trying to > kill one with their spears. I am morally certain > that the pteratorn would enjoy the meal as much as > I would enjoy the (brief) spectacle. There is joy in a fight well fought, and often wisdom in the knowledge gained thereby. As to the outcome of the struggle, there is glory in victory, and there may be dignity even in defeat. But there are none of these things in the desire to abjectly humiliate one's foes just to be able to revel in their debasement. -- | Paul DuBois {allegra,ihnp4,seismo}!uwvax!uwmacc!dubois --+-- | Ritual and Ceremony: Life Itself. |
